Overlooking the evocative landscape of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most iconic and beloved districts, MUNI LA TERRASSE RESTAURANT is part of the exclusive MUNI KYOTO complex, inaugurated in 2020 in a privileged location facing the renowned Togetsukyo Bridge. For centuries, this area has captivated visitors from around the world thanks to its extraordinary harmony between nature and culture, offering scenery that continuously changes with the passing of the seasons. The flow of the Katsura River, the lush vegetation, and the natural light that permeates the landscape become fundamental elements of the experience, contributing to the unique character of the place.

Conceived as a welcoming and refined space dedicated to breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea, MUNI LA TERRASSE invites guests to experience a direct connection with the surrounding environment. Large glazed surfaces open the interiors to the landscape, allowing nature to become an integral part of the architecture while offering privileged views of the river and the gardens surrounding the property. This constant relationship with the outdoors guided the design choices, which were oriented towards the use of natural materials and an essential aesthetic language capable of conveying balance, serenity, and authenticity.

The project, developed by Uchida Design Studio according to the vision of architect Shigeru Uchida, received important international recognition with the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 in the Interior Architecture category. The award celebrates the project’s design quality and its ability to create spaces where architecture, materiality, and atmosphere merge harmoniously, giving rise to an authentic and contemporary sensory experience.

A distinctive feature of MUNI LA TERRASSE, as well as the other spaces within the MUNI KYOTO complex, is the particular attention given to the materiality of details. Surfaces, textures, and decorative elements establish a continuous dialogue with the landscape visible through the large glazed openings, strengthening the relationship between interior and exterior spaces and contributing to an atmosphere of remarkable elegance and naturalness.

To interpret this design vision through light, Shigeru Uchida selected Vistosi as a partner for the creation of a bespoke collection developed specifically for the restaurant’s interiors. The installation draws inspiration from the bamboo canes that characterize the landscape of Arashiyama, reinterpreting their verticality and lightness through the transparency of glass.

The composition is defined by an essential and rigorous form that combines smooth transparent crystal cylinders with sandblasted ribbed glass elements, creating a refined balance between transparency and materiality. The pure crystal canes, crafted in different lengths and diameters, are suspended at varying heights and arranged both as individual elements and clustered compositions. Light passes through the surfaces, enhancing their textures and generating delicate refraction effects that subtly accompany the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Completed in Kyoto in 2020, this project demonstrates Vistosi’s ability to develop bespoke lighting solutions that engage in dialogue with both architecture and the natural environment. An intervention that combines the excellence of Murano glassmaking tradition with Japanese aesthetic sensibility, helping to define a sophisticated, welcoming setting that is deeply connected to the landscape surrounding it.
